Teaching
Adam has taught in-person and online courses in International Relations. Leveraging his academic and professional training, Ratzlaff seeks to provide students not only with the theoretical underpinnings necessary to understand foreign affairs, but with the skills necessary to thrive in the profession. This includes developing skills in writing op-eds and policy briefs as well as analyzing topics from a variety of perspectives.

“Shows great passion for teaching and topics in general. Throughout the course, Prof. Ratzlaff connected theory with reality and gave us the profesional [sic] and real outlook of the discipline.”
“Great Professor. I thought I was going to hate the class but it turned out to be one of the best classes I have taken at FIU.”
“One of the best instructors at FIU. Truly passionate about the subject, which reflected every single day in his lessons. If only more professors could be like him.”
“The written assignments were different from any others I had outside of this class, and having the opportunity to write in a different manner was very beneficial to me in terms of broadening the scope of my writing.”
Mentoring
As part of Adam’s teaching method, he regularly requires that students write op-eds based on their own interests in foreign affairs. Each semester, he invites students to work with him to hone their arguments and attempt to publish their articles in reputable foreign affairs publications. Students from his International Political Economy course have gone on to see articles written for class published in Charged Affairs and Diplomatic Courier. Some examples include:
-
“Nicaragua Needs Education, Not Thought Control” Diplomatic Courier (Valeria Izaguirre, 2022).
-
“The Brazilian Sneeze that Might Put Argentina in the ICU.” Diplomatic Courier (Vincent Brandolt, 2021).
-
“To Save the Niger Delta, Lawsuits are Not Enough.” Diplomatic Courier (Stephanie Uviovo, 2022).
-
“Reimagining the Value of Indigenous Education.” Charged Affairs (Pierina Anton, 2020).
-
“Global Trade’s Shifting Tides This Holiday Season.” Charged Affairs (Juan Salcedo, 2019).
