Sino-Latin American Affairs

As China has risen on the global stage, the nation has also increased its presence in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Today, China is a major investor and one of the leading trade partners for countries across the region. U.S. policymakers are increasingly concerned about Chinese influence in the region—from Confucius Institutes to political and military engagements. However, while countries in the region have their own concerns, many Latin American and Caribbean leaders view China’s rise and interest in the region as an opportunity. Understanding Chinese engagement in the region and how Latin American and Caribbean leaders engage with China is critical to developing sound policies and practices surrounding U.S.-Chinese competition in the region.

Adam regularly analyzes Chinese activity in the Americas. He has published on Chinese foreign aid and investment, China’s role in regional organizations, Confucius Institutes, and how leaders in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean can and should respond to Chinese activities, among other issues related to China’s influence in the Americas. In addition to his publications on Chinese engagement in the region, Ratzlaff has provided commentary on Chinese activities in the Americas for different news outlets and engaged with policymakers on how best to frame and respond to Chinese engagement.
